What YouTube actually announced on July 27

YouTube said it would begin rolling out Jewels and Gifts in Japan and expand Hype there. The Japan-specific update lets viewers use up to three no-cost Hypes each week, then exchange Jewels for additional Hype. MoguLive also reported the change as a new way for viewers to support the discovery of emerging creators.

The announcement is specific to Japan’s expansion, but paid Hype is not limited to Japan. YouTube’s current Virtual Items policy lists Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan for Hype with Jewels. Even in a supported country, the button still depends on the viewer account, gradual rollout, and the channel and video meeting Hype eligibility rules.

Hype, Likes, and live Gifts do different jobs

A Like is a broad reaction. Hype is a discovery feature for recent long-form uploads from eligible YPP channels with 500–500,000 subscribers. Hype adds points, smaller eligible channels receive a larger point bonus, and top videos can appear on a country-specific weekly leaderboard.

Jewels-powered Gifts are a separate live-stream feature. Viewers buy Jewels in the mobile app and exchange them for animated Gifts on eligible vertical or horizontal live streams. The creator earns Rubies based on those Gifts. Sending a Gift, hyping an upload, and liking a video are therefore not interchangeable actions.

No Hype button does not automatically mean an account problem

The video must be a recent long-form upload from an eligible channel. Shorts, private or unlisted videos, made-for-kids content, age-restricted videos, videos with Content ID claims, and live streams or Premieres while they are live are among the exclusions in YouTube’s policy.

YouTube also says Hype is rolling out gradually. Update the mobile app, check another eligible upload, and review the country and video requirements before assuming that the account has been blocked or that the creator disabled the feature.

Treat Jewels as a digital purchase, not just a reaction button

YouTube’s viewer policy says Jewels are bought in its mobile apps and purchasers must be at least 18 in an available location. Purchased Jewels currently do not expire under the general policy, although promotional bonus Jewels may have an expiry date. Jewels are generally non-refundable, and bundle sizes and prices may change.

When a viewer sends a live Gift, their username and profile image may appear publicly in the stream, chat, or pinned area. In Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, a viewer who Hypes with Jewels during the first seven days can also have their handle shown in a recognition section in the video description. Check the amount needed, default bundle, balance, and local purchase screen before paying.

Creators should verify the upload before expecting discovery

Eligible channels can have Hype enabled by default, but not every upload qualifies. Confirm that the video is long-form, public, less than seven days old, and free from the exclusions listed in YouTube’s Hype policy. A Hype badge or leaderboard position can create another discovery path, but it does not guarantee search ranking, views, or subscribers.

For live Gifts, creators need to accept YouTube’s Virtual Items Module and enable Gifts under Earn in YouTube Studio. Clear titles and thumbnails that accurately match the video remain more useful than trying to force a trend: YouTube explicitly excludes misleading, clickbait, or sensational content from Hype eligibility.
